Alternatively, for a little taste of Americana, try popping along to the New York Steam Packet, just off Rose Street. This cosy little diner, with open kitchen, does a cracking set menu for £15.95, and if you have any US friends hankering after something familiar, a rather impressive giant papier–mache Statue of Liberty adorns one of the walls.

Even better, both allow you to bring your own beer and wine.

Small but perfectly formed

The New York Steam Packet is a tiny restaurant off Rose Street in Edinburgh which is accessed via a steep spiral staircase.

Booking is essential and there are generally a couple of "sittings" per evening.

The menu is small but not limited - we opted for the burgers and were not disappointed with our meal from the set menu.

The restaurant isn't licensed but you are encouraged to bring your own bottle.

This is a lovely little place which I consider to be a "hidden gem" in Edinburgh.

New York Steam Packet, 31 Rose Street Lane North, EH2 2NP, Edinburgh
I went here last night for a friends birthday and had a brilliant time. I have actually been meaning to go for a while but as it isnt open on Sunday, when I have been trying to use it for a certain dinner I havent managed to go.

We had a table of 9 of us and here there is a set menu for £15.99 a head. Starters tend to be potato skins, pate, soup and mussels (unfortunately they didnt have any mussels left). I had the potato skins which were very good. They came iwth a generous helping of salad. Other friends had the pate which they were slightly dissappointed with as felt it could have been better given the size of the restaurant.

For mains you have a selection of steak (£2.50 surcharge), burgers, salmon and vegetable enchilladas. I had the burger which although was very small very good, it comes with again a good helping of salad and chips so it is actually the perfect sized portion.

We didnt end up having pudding as we had a birthday cake so we just had teas and coffees.

The joy of this place is that its BYO and they only charge £1 corkage for wine and 50p for beers. Out total bill came to £184 (service included) so we ended up paying a little over £20 each of a 3 course meal and plenty of wine!

The restaurant is tiny but its great for a big party of people going out for dinner. Think it may be a slightly different night if you are a table of 2 in amongst 2 big parties though.

This wee gem of a restaurant is definitely working seeking out. The service was second to none, nothing was too much trouble. The set menu was extraordinary value and the Dime cake desert was to die for.

We'll definitely be back!!

Great find ! - excellent restaurant with tasty grub, excellent and friendly service and a warm welcoming atmosphere. Set menu is brilliant value without any compromise on the food being served.

Took my folks here a few months ago, having been for my own birthday last year - I love this restaurant, the food is fantastic (and despite the menu being small, it has something for everyone).

We all had the moules followed by steak and then Dime cake - Jim was listening when my dad said the mussels were the best he'd had and produced an extra serving for free!

Mum and Dad are a little hard to please, but they were so impressed, I know for a fact they've been back with their friends since.

I can't recommend this place highly enough!

Staff so friendly, rare nowadays to find somewhere where you actually feel welcome. Will definately go back next time i'm in Edinburgh.
